Your Opinion Please!

Oh my goodness, it’s been awhile, hasn’t it? There was the Valentine’s Day rush, which was great.  Guys are so cute when they are shopping for a little something special for their sweeties!  I’ve also been trying to reorganize my studio, which is a job and a half.  My soldering, metalsmithing and shipping stations are nice and neat – next are the enamel and beading stations. We’ll leave my favorite – the paperwork and files – for last.

Several weeks ago I mentioned a new ear wire design that I was excited about. Then I realized I should probably test it before saying anything.  So I looked at both form and function. I brought it to my SCWBEC meeting and asked the members which style they preferred. Results were mixed, half preferred the traditional French wire and half preferred the oval leverback. Let me walk you through the differences and you can tell me what you like best.

Here are photos of the two styles, with the leverback closed and open:

The French wire on the left is simple, with no moving parts to break.  However, I have heard of women who sometimes lose an earring because the ear wires are not secure.  One can use an ear nut to secure the French wire, but there is some fumbling involved.  The oval leverback closes securely – however, as true for all leverbacks, one must be gentle when opening or closing the lever.  The oval hangs a bit lower than the French ear wire and looks a bit more contemporary.  In wearing it, I noticed the traditional ear wire restricts the motion of the earring, while the oval leverback allowed a nice swing of the earring.

The design possibilities are the really exciting thing about the oval leverback.  Take the following textured silver and enamel earrings:

The one on the right is traditional French ear wire, with the oval on the left, again.  They look pretty comparable, don’t they?  But look at this:

Or this:

Or this:

The traditional French earwire does not have room for any other design elements.  But look at the oval!  Can’t you just imagine the swing of the silver diamond and the turquoise bead dangle on this earring?  The “look” of the earring can be changed in a jiffy, by sliding different color dangles on – in this case coral, pearl or turquoise.  Of course, this is just one design option.  I can omit the silver diamond piece and hang several dangles on the oval.  I can work with chains hanging from the oval – lots of possibilities!

Please leave me a comment and let me know if you have a preference – traditional or oval leverback?  Thanks for your help!

    Hey Maria,
I love the idea of the leverback, but I like the look of the french on these earrings. I’ve done leverbacks on shorter earrings or I like the look of the ones with a little embellishment on the front. The work well with dressier earrings in my opinion and the french are great for either casual or dressy. Hope that makes sense, lol

Dee, I never really liked leverbacks – always looked very fuddy-duddy to me. But I fell for these because they looked a bit more contemporary. Also, the positioning of the hole sometimes makes it difficult to put a French ear wire on, as there is not a huge space in the loop. The hole in the earring needs to be as close to the edge as possible, but with enough material at the outer edge so that it doesn’t crack.

I won’t be giving up the French, as many people still like them, but I think I will try these leverbacks and see how they go. Some days you just have to let the market decide!

Thanks you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts 🙂

I have to say that I am partial to the leverback because of the versatility. But with that said, they both have a place in design.

I agree, Loretta, I think I would like to use both, depending on the design I have in mind. I see the oval leverbacks with more contemporary creations.

I like both. One seems more formal and the other is for daytime wear.

Welcome and thanks for your opinion, Lael! I agree, I will be using both – there have been no clearcut favorites in my informal polling – both have been well received, depending on style.

I love the website. Especially leading off with the fundraiser for VetDogs! The necklace is gorgeous, gotta get one for my daughter. How long do you think it would take to ship to NC?

I think the lever back looks better in this style earring.

Thanks for stopping by, Yvonne! You know I’m pretty passionate about VetDogs, so it’s always front and center, with me 🙂 I mail USPS Priority, so I think shipping should be about 3 days to you.

I think these earring hangs better with the leverback, too!
