It Finally Happened

Does anyone remember this post, where I had a computer problem and strongly recommended everyone have a back-up system in place?  Well, I’m REALLY glad I took my own advice!  I do regular back-ups of my hard drive and every so often do a back up to a second external drive.  Last week, I did a double back-up.  The very next day, my computer crashed – dead, dead, dead.  When I brought it into the Apple Store, the Geniuses kept conferring and muttering “Panic kernal mode.”  My system was a month out of warranty, so needless to say, I was worried.  Very worried.  The only thing I wasn’t worried about was losing my data.

But the nice people at Apple gave me a “get out of jail free card” and covered the repair, since it was so close to the warranty expiration.  Deep sigh of relief!  But nonetheless, they had to ship it out at this, my busiest time of the year.  But it came back today and I’m back in business!

So if you didn’t believe me before, please believe me now – BACK-UP your computer!  Someday you might be very grateful that you did, as I was.

I have this topic on my list of things to discuss at my next Apple lesson. I think I’m doing it, but I need reassurance. Thanks for posting … and REMINDING us!

Susan, it’s always important to back-up, whether you use a computer for business, or not. Who could bear to lose treasured digital photos? As the Apple folks told me, it’s not backed-up unless it’s backed-up in TWO places! I’m glad you will be confirming your back-up plan!

I’ve soo been there recently and you could not have given better advice! Lucky for me I did the back up just before mine finally crashed!

Yay, Dee! Glad your crash wasn’t tragic. Whenever I procrastinate on a back-up, all I need to do is think of what it would mean to lose ALL my files – EVERYTHING – that back-up gets done in a hurry!

There are new options with companies that do a wireless auto back-up into a “cloud” – might have to look into that as I get busier.
